The Return of Frontiers
About the project
“The Return of Frontiers” tells the story of an incredible historical U-turn: the old iron curtain separating East from West, believed to have disappeared for good with the expansion of the Schengen area, is resurfacing throughout the continent to protect North from South. From the fall of the wall to the present day, taking in the successive enlargements of the European Union, the film examines the eventful lives of six border residents who reinvent their lives in a space without barriers only to be plunged back into a world of barricades in the summer of 2015. In a production combining original archives, footage filmed in 2017 and an innovative use of cartography, the film provides a striking account of the resurgence of borders from the perspective of six border residents confronted with barbed wire fences by the vagaries of geopolitics.

About the research
Simon Brunel widmet sich in seinem Langzeitprojekt der Frage nach den Grenzen Europas über die Betrachtung der Geschichte und des Funktionswandels von europäischen Grenzanlagen. Der Film bildet die Fortsetzung eines Projektes, das er bereits 2006 begonnen hat: Vor dem Hintergrund der Öffnung des Europäischen Freihandelsraums bereiste er mit einem Filmteam die 3000 km lange Grenze von der Ostsee über die Westgrenze Polens bis zur Adria und dokumentierte über 400 Grenzposten, die entweder niedergerissen oder umgewandelt wurden (z.B. in Spielhallen oder Geschäfte) und porträtierte die Menschen, die er an der schwindenden Grenzlinie traf. Im Dokumentarfilm „Die Rückkehr der Grenzen“ sucht der Autor die damaligen Stationen und Protagonisten wieder auf, um zu zeigen, wie sich ihre Existenz verändert hat und was von den ehemaligen Grenzposten noch übrig ist. Mit der Flüchtlingskrise und dem Neubau von Grenzzäunen erhält das Projekt nun eine ungeahnte Wende und Relevanz.
