Crossing Borders for Indian applicants
The “Crossing Borders” program, implemented jointly by the Robert Bosch Foundation and the Literarisches Colloquium Berlin, funds international research visits by authors, filmmakers and photographers. Applicants from China (including Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao), India, Indonesia, Japan and Vietnam can apply for research grants. We are looking for creative people working on relevant themes with a concrete publication proposal and a willingness to engage differentially with the German culture.
The aim of the program is to support the development of creative projects which break existing stereotypes and open up a broad perspective on the diversity and multifaceted character of Germany to a larger public. Research grants are available for literary and essay prose works, poetry, photo-text volumes, children’s and young adults’ literature, scripts for documentary and feature films, radio programs and multimedia productions. The size of the grant will depend on the duration of the research and may amount to a maximum of up to € 10.000. A detailed calculation can be made easily with the aid of the online application form.
Program Details
An independent jury will select projects for the grant from the incoming applications. We expect to announce the results by mid-July and the end of January respectively. The grant holder is expected to demonstrate a high level of individual responsibility. We cannot offer extensive personal supervision, but would, as far as possible, gladly advise on research-relevant places/ institutions and provide contacts in Germany. In addition to the publication of the Crossing Borders projects, it is also possible to apply for grants to present these works at public events. Applications in this regard are to be sent to the Literarisches Colloquium Berlin.
FAQs:
Funding is available for research for publications in the categories of literary and essayistic prose, poetry, photo-text volumes, children’s and young adults’ literature, scripts for documentary and feature films, radio programmes and digital publications (e.g. e-books, as long as they are published by an e-book publisher, contributions which appear on websites with editorial supervision and with relevant reach, apps for mobile end devices). A multimedia combination of digital and non-digital formats is also possible. No funding is available for exhibitions and theatre productions.
The process of calculating and preparing invoices involves submitting supporting documents; invoices may be submitted up to the maximum permitted amount.
The invoice for the grant for board and lodging is calculated on the basis of actual days of travel. The final standard amounts are calculated using the invoice form.
The permitted grant for the preparation of work does not have to be calculated on the basis of supporting documents; instead, it is a standard amount. The evidence required here is the research report together with the invoice form. The grant for the preparation of work can also be used for costs which cannot be invoiced via the other items, e.g. costs for translations or guides.
The synopsis should be as long or as short as necessary. Between three and ten pages is an adequate length.
The applicant him/herself specifies the duration of the research and the intended publication deadline on the application form. However, no more than 31 days of research trip will be subsidised.
No, because the Crossing Borders research funding is set up as a grant. The grant covers the research trip and not the means of production. For the details of the grant, please see the FAQ Finance Plan.
Applicants who have already received Crossing Borders funding are welcome to apply again if the research for the first project is complete, i.e. if the research report and the proofs of how the funds were used have been submitted; however, priority will be given to first-time applications.
You can apply as often as you like.
In principle, this is possible. However, one project leader should be named who will be the contact person for the Robert Bosch Foundation and will be responsible for the project. In such cases, only one application form needs to be completed. Résumés and details of the other participants should be attached to the application. The application for the grant for the preparation of work may only be for one person.
It is not necessary for applicants to already have public recognition. The programme is open to young talent as well as established authors, filmmakers and photographers.
There is no age limit for applicants.
The funding is given to authors, filmmakers and photographers who are planning a research trip for a project which addresses relevant social themes and developments and engages differentially with other countries and cultures.
